March always feels like that strange bridge between the “new year, new energy” momentum and the quiet realization that… we might already be running on fumes.

You started the year with big goals – healthier boundaries, better systems, more time for your actual life – but then client fires flare up, team questions pile on, and suddenly you’re stuck in reactive mode again. If you’ve ever felt like your business is one big game of whack-a-mole, this month’s Ratio Reads is for you.

I’ve been hearing this from so many of you lately: that feeling of being deeply needed by your business, but also deeply drained by it. The truth is, we didn’t build our businesses to run us ragged. We built them to support our lives, not consume them. We built them because we are the parent who needs to be available. Because we got tired of asking permission for time off, and because we wanted to do and be MORE.

This month’s Ratio Reads is dedicated to exactly that: learning to run your business so it doesn’t run you. These four books offer practical tools, big mindset shifts, and gentle (and not-so-gentle) nudges to reclaim your time, your energy, and your joy – while still leading with integrity and heart.

📖 Essentialism by Greg McKeown

A must-read for anyone feeling stretched too thin (which, let’s face it, is almost all of us at some point). Essentialism is about cutting through the noise and focusing on what truly matters – because doing less, but better, is the real key to success.

This book felt like a giant permission slip to me. It reminded me that saying yes to everything is really saying no to the things and people that matter most.

What you can implement:
Start with a “priority audit.” Write down everything on your plate this week and ask yourself: If I could only accomplish one thing, what would move the needle the most? Then, design your week around that. You’ll be amazed how much mental space this frees up — and how much more effective (and present) you’ll feel.

📖 Clockwork by Mike Michalowicz

If you’ve ever worried your business would completely fall apart without you, Clockwork is your wake-up call (and your new best friend).

When I first read this, I realized just how many tiny decisions and bottlenecks depended on me — and how much that was holding the business (and me) back. Clockwork offers a step-by-step guide to building systems that allow your firm to run smoothly, even when you step away.

Imagine actually taking a real vacation, or even just a no-email weekend, without your phone glued to your hand. It’s possible – and this book shows you how.

What you can implement:
Identify your “Queen Bee Role” (QBR) – the single most important activity your business must protect at all costs. Then, begin delegating or automating tasks that distract you from this core function. Even handing off one or two recurring tasks can start to build your confidence and momentum.

📖 Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman

A refreshing reality check on productivity, Four Thousand Weeks reminds us that we’ll never “catch up” on everything – and that’s okay.

When I first started Ratio, I thought if I just worked harder, I’d eventually feel “caught up” – but that day never came. Instead I had to find ways to trim the fat and work smarter. This book gave me the understanding (and a big, comforting nudge) to embrace the idea that life is finite. We have roughly 4,000 weeks on this earth – and no one can do it all.

What you can implement:
Set a “done for the day” time this week – and actually stick to it. Notice what tasks rise to the top when your time feels more finite. It’s such a powerful way to clarify your true priorities and let go of the rest.

📖 Radical Candor by Kim Scott

Leadership isn’t about being “nice” or “tough” – it’s about clear, honest, and kind communication.

As business owners, many of us are so used to people-pleasing that we end up avoiding hard conversations altogether. Radical Candor taught me that candor is actually one of the kindest things we can offer – to ourselves, our team, and our clients. One of the lessons from my law enforcement days that I repeat daily is “clear is kind”. This book felt like it reinforced that in new ways for me.

This book shares practical tools to help you communicate directly while still showing you care deeply. It’s especially powerful for anyone managing a team, working with contractors, or building strong client relationships.

What you can implement:
Schedule a “listening one-on-one” with a team member, client, or even a collaborator this month. Ask open-ended questions, truly listen (without fixing), and give kind but direct feedback. You’ll be amazed at the clarity, trust, and forward momentum this creates.

Why these books matter (and why now)

As the founder of a growing firm, you’re not just designing spaces or overseeing projects. You’re also shaping culture, holding vision, managing budgets, guiding teams, and making sure your own life doesn’t get swallowed in the process.

These books are gentle (and sometimes not-so-gentle) reminders that your business should serve you, not drain you. You deserve a firm that runs smoothly, supports your life, and gives you space to breathe, rest, and enjoy the moments that really matter.

I hope these reads inspire you as much as they’ve inspired me. If you’re looking for more book recommendations you can check out the January and February Ratio Reads as a starting point!
